Basic Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Information

PoE provides great cost savings and flexibility for equipment installation when there is no access to an AC outlet at the location of the equipment. Thus instead of hiring costly licensed electricians to install an outlet one can use PoE over network Ethernet cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, etc.) to transmit the DC voltage from the switch or router location to the equipment being connected, i.e., security surveillance camera, etc.

There are several PoE schemes or standards. Certain devices using the IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at require "toggling" or a resistive change between the power source and the powered device. However numerous access points and security cameras use passive voltage flow without any resistive change. This is generally true particularly for lower end priced items.

This power injector is generally used in 10/100 Ethernet ports where energy is provided by two unused pairs (4 wires). For example, many security cameras on the market, particularly those in the $100.00 or less price range will follow this scheme. These cameras ship with an AC power supply and are often desired to be installed where there is no direct access to an AC outlet. Utilizing an AIR802 passive PoE splitter/injector kit allow the use of an Ethernet network cable to provide the network connectivity and carry the power. At the switch or router end, our injector would connect to the data port and power supply. Data and power would flow over the network cable to the far end, for example a camera. At the camera end the splitter would connect to the cable and split out the data and power connections. This is fine to a point. Typically these types of security cameras utilize a 5vdc ouput power supply. Depending on variables such as the current, wire AWG size, etc. it might only be operable over a 20 feet length of cable. This is due to voltage drop. If only 4.5 vdc arrives at the camera it may be insufficient to operate the camera. That is where our PSA612V-NA-B comes in. Instead of using the power supply that came with the camera, utilze our selectable voltage output device. Start with the lowest voltage option,  6vdc and check if the camera is working. If not slide the switch to the next highest voltage output and continue until the camera is operational. NEVER start with the highest voltage and then lower it!
