Basic Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) Information
PoE offers great cost savings and flexibility in deploying equipment, particularly since no AC power outlet may be available where the powered equipment is to be located. PoE allows the Ethernet network cable to carry the DC voltage from the injector possibly hundreds of feet away from where AC outlets are located to where the powered equipment is located. Power over LAN or Ethernet cable provides great flexibility and economical cost.
There are two major power-over-Ethernet schemes. One can be referred to as passive PoE, where the injector does not negotiate the wattage required with the powered device (PD), thus voltage freely flows. The costs of building products is less for manufacturers thus this method continues to be commonly deployed. This is also defined under the IEEE 802.3af standard as Mode B.This uses the spare pairs in the Ethernet cable with a 10/100 interface.
The second scheme is the IEEE 802.3af Mode A standard which defines a method where the wattage is negotiated with the powered device. In this scheme the voltage flows over the same pairs in the Ethernet cable as the data information is flowing over. This can be a 10/100 interface or a 1000BASE-T (Gigabit) interface.
